Case Study: Raising the quality of the North’s City Regions
The project's objectives were:
- First, to provide a practical, working definition and explanation of the term Green Infrastructure and how it could be applied to communities across the North of England.
- Second, to investigate current approaches to the implementation of Green Infrastructure in the UK but learning from experience across Europe.
- Thirdly, to investigate and explain the key economic benefits that investment in Green Infrastructure can bring and where value can be added to a ‘traditional’ economic regeneration strategy;
- Finally, to provide the Strategic Framework for action to allow emerging City Regions to undertake their own Green Infrastructure strategies and action plans and see, consequently, an increase in the quality of the North’s urban centres and surrounding rural hinterlands.
As a direct result of the work undertaken for the Northern Way, the North West Region has picked up strongly on Green Infrastructure as a key theme for the regeneration and renewal of its urban centres, based upon its 3 City Regions. To date, one City Region (Central Lancashire) has formally decided to undertake a Green Infrastructure Strategy, with others due to follow suit. Our work undertaken for the Northern Way, and subsequently for the Natural Economy North West project on further refining the impacts and benefits of Green Infrastructure, has placed ECOTEC at the forefront of this exciting new arena of strategic regeneration activity
